Celebrating 25 Years of Community Betterment!

Rooted in a love for community and life on the St. Lawrence River, the Alexandria Bay Chapter of The Foundation for Community Betterment has been creating ripples of kindness since 2001. That summer, we launched our first Paddle for Betterment, now a cherished “River Rat” tradition in the heart of the 1000 Islands. Through volunteerism, fundraising, and community spirit, our chapter continues to bring people together and create lasting local impact—spreading the Ripple Effect of Kindness one act at a time. 🌊

PADDLE for Betterment — Est. 2001

Each July, families, friends, and individuals from near and far come together to Paddle for Betterment—now a beloved St. Lawrence River tradition! Whether in kayaks, canoes, skiffs, or on stand-up paddle boards, participants of all ages “raise their paddles” for a morning of fun in the sun and to help create the powerful Ripple Effect we call Betterment. Our iconic local fireboat kicks off the event with a celebratory spray of water, signaling the start of the paddle promptly at 9 AM.  From there, paddlers cruise the scenic shores of Alexandria Bay, enjoying breathtaking views of the Thousand Islands—including Boldt Castle and passing freighters—while collecting cards for their poker hand.  Incredible GRAND PRIZES are awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers in both Adult and Youth Divisions—and all paddlers are eligible for a door prize, too!  We’re very proud to carry on this meaningful event in memory of Carolyn Curley—our event founder, a driving force behind our chapter, an avid paddler and a passionate believer in the mission of Betterment.  Her legacy continues to shape and inspire our community of volunteers.

In Loving Memory of John N. Russell
John N. “Big John” Russell was a lifelong steward of the Thousand Islands and a defining presence throughout the region. A proud “River Rat,” John was raised in northern New York and devoted nearly his entire life to the river, its people, and its traditions.

Known for his warm greetings at Pine Tree Point and Bonnie Castle Resort, John played a central role in shaping the community of Alexandria Bay and its surrounding areas. He chaired the Alexandria Bay Chamber of Commerce for many years and was twice honored as Citizen of the Year. Among his enduring legacies are several familiar local traditions that continue to define the Thousand Islands experience, including the Alexandria Bay Boat Show, the Blessing of the Fleet, and the Independence Day Boldt Castle Fireworks.

Picture
An avid tennis player, John embraced the game with enthusiasm and generosity, fostering friendship and camaraderie both on and off the court. His love for the sport lives on through the John N. Russell Memorial Doubles Tennis Tournament, where family and friends continue to celebrate his enduring spirit.

Equally important was John’s steadfast support of the Foundation for Community Betterment, actively participating in paddle events and advancing its “Ripple Effect” mission through action, encouragement, and example. His legacy flows on through the River he loved, the community traditions he built, and the lives he touched.

Recipient Gifts – Making an Immediate, Positive Impact!
Since 2001, the Alexandria Bay Chapter has proudly given over $385,000 back to our community—thanks to the unwavering generosity of our supporters—directly assisting individuals, local organizations and community projects in times of need.
Recipients must: (1) Be thoughtfully nominated by someone within our local network, (2) Demonstrate a spirit of giving and (3) Must make an immediate and specific difference to that individual's life or that of the organization.  All nominations are carefully vetted within our local Recipient Committee and agreed upon first, locally.  They are then reviewed and approved by our National Board of Directors to ensure they meet all three essential criteria before funds are properly dispersed.

The Ron McLennan Immediate Need Fund was established in memory of Ronald J. McLennan, a longtime member of Betterment’s Host Committee who passed away in 2011. This fund allows Betterment to provide support to Alexandria Bay individuals and organizations in need throughout the year—not just during our summer events. A devoted community leader and Superintendent of Alexandria Central School for 27 years, Ron gave generously to the Alexandria Bay community, creating a ripple effect that continues to inspire our mission today.

High School Scholarship Awards

Growing Our Chapter & Impact

Our chapter continues to evolve—growing in ideas, size, and community impact—as we spread the “Ripple Effect” of kindness in Alexandria Bay.  Each year brings more volunteers, greater event participation, and exciting new initiatives!  Here are the most recent highlights:
Picture
In 2024, we proudly launched our NEWLY improved and branded Lemonade Stand for Betterment!  Local kids are invited to “Spread the Ripple Effect, one glass at a time!” by selling lemonade at the Big M Supermarket, Garlock’s ACE Hardware, across town at various summer events AND at Community Betterment Weekend itself.  It’s a fun, hands-on way for young community members to have fun & give back!
To volunteer your family/kids for a time slot this year, please contact Michele Carr: (315) 994-7429

In 2025, we launched The Ripple Report, a news column in partnership with the Thousand Islands Sun. This feature spotlights Betterment news, recipient stories, and exciting chapter updates—published weekly in the summer (May-August) and monthly through the rest of the year.  You can subscribe to have the TI Sun mailed to you each week, wherever you live.   Our column will also be shared here and on our Facebook page after it appears in print. Special thanks to Trina Keefe for leading this PR initiative for Betterment!

We extend heartfelt thanks to Jeanne Snow, former TI Sun owner and long-time board member, for her support and invaluable publicity help since our chapter’s founding.
