Alexandria Bay & Wellesley Island Fire Departments, Alexandria Bay, NY
4th Annual Alexandria Bay Paddle Recipient
Though rain stopped the boats from making waves in the St. Lawrence Seaway, it couldn’t stop the tremendous ripple of support for the 4th Annual Paddle event in 2004. Despite the weather, more than $6,000 was raised for the Alexandria Bay and Wellesley Island Volunteer Fire Companies.
With this gift, the fire companies purchased much-needed defibrillators, and according to Fire Chief Randy Beach of the Wellesley Island squad, this was the first equipment donation they have ever received. And, it is a critical component of their lifesaving efforts.
“This gift has increased the level of care we can give the members of our community who are in need of our services,” commented Randy. “We are able to respond to calls with a greater confidence knowing we have equipment that can save a life.”
Nationally, less than 10% of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside of a hospital survive. The primary reason for this statistic is time. CPR helps buy time, but defibrillation provides the shock necessary to restart a victim’s heart, and therefore saves lives. Betterment is proud to be able to bring more of this vital equipment to the Alexandria Bay area.
Randy shared that the fire fighters were thrilled to receive the defibrillators and honored by Betterment’s support. He added, “Even though we hope we will never have to use the heart defibrillator, we are grateful for the security it gives us when we go on a call and know we can save someone’s life.”
