Ryan has end-stage renal failure.  His kidney transplant failed and he's now on home dialysis six days/week.  A young minister and preacher, he lost his job but continues to volunteer at another church.  Ryan has remained upbeat and focused on others despite his dire situation.  He is married with 3 children, ages 10, 8, and 6.  His wife recently lost her job but was lucky enough to find a new one.  Her new insurance comes with a $6K deductible that was an unforeseen, immediate expense for them.  A donation from Betterment went towards groceries, gas, household needs, etc. (as gift cards). This allowed them to free up cash for some of the deductible.
