Mike Ray was diagnosed with myotonic dystrophy, a hereditary condition that is degenerative and affects many systems of the body.  He had complicated spinal surgery to repair deteriorating vertebrae.  Prior to that, he also suffered a minor stroke.  His disabling back pain and recovery from corrective surgery forced Mike to shut down his self-owned business.  As a result, he no longer had income or health insurance.  Due to their financial crisis, the family was unable to pay their mortgage and bills.  There were in danger of losing their home to foreclosure.  Receiving a gift from Betterment to cover their mortgage payments allowed them to keep their home so that mike could continue healing and he and his family could get back on their feet.
