Life with Cancer, Falls Church, VA
2nd Annual Washington, DC Casino Night Event Recipient
The recipient for this year’s Casino Royale comes to Betterment from one of our recipients from two years ago—Becky Bentley. Becky’s husband Shawn died from cancer in September 2005, and Betterment and friends of the Bentleys helped provide some financial support for Becky and her two young daughters during a very difficult time.
Becky brought to Betterment’s attention a program called “Life with Cancer” out of Inova Health Care System in Fairfax, VA. As the Bentleys know firsthand, when cancer strikes, a patient’s life can be changed forever. But the effect of cancer is sometimes just as dramatic for the patient’s family.
Proceeds from Casino Royale benefitted “Life with Cancer,” a new program created to support families during a loved one’s illness. Its mission is to “enhance the quality of life of those affected by cancer by providing education, information, and support.” The program is one of the most comprehensive educational and support initiatives of its kind.
Betterment’s specific donation to the program was geared to support the children’s section. Funds raised from Casino Royale helped to enable “Life with Cancer” to help these young people cope with a parent’s illness or death from cancer.
In a note to Betterment following Casino Royale, “Life with Cancer“ Children's Program Manager Jenny Eckert wrote:
“I wanted to thank you for all you are doing for “Life with Cancer“ children's programs. The Casino Night was so much fun and I'm sure everyone who came had as good a time there as I did. I think the night was perfect. Thank you for supporting all we do for children affected by cancer”.
