2005 Immediate Need Recipient
Board member Shannon Curley was introduced to Karen Holmes of Biloxi, MS in November 2005 when Shannon participated in a volunteer clean-up trip with St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Washington, DC. Although Karen's house was devastated by the storm surge, Karen coordinated clean-up efforts for her parish in Biloxi. Karen's commitment to her community was truly inspiring, especially in a time of such personal need.
Unfortunately, because the Holmes' house fell outside the official flood zone - about one mile from the Gulf, they wouldn't receive any insurance money to fix their home. To help them rebuild, Betterment shared $5,000 from the Immediate Need Fund and then followed up with another $5,000 from joint efforts in Betterment cities around the country!
