At 42 years old, Danny Shanz was young and successful, supporting his family by working as a PGA golf professional at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland. On July 23, 2009, tragedy struck when a bolt of lightning touched down near Danny while he was teaching a golf lesson, leaving him with extensive injuries. Due to the lightning strike, Danny suffers from short term memory loss, vertigo and permanent damage to his right leg, all of which currently prevent him from doing the job he loves.
At our 10th Annual Golf Tournament in October 2009, Danny served as our recipient and we were able to assist Danny, his wife Holly and two young children Austin and April by raising money to pay their monthly mortgage. In September 2010, Betterment was approached by a group of Congressional Club members, The Friends of Danny, to help raise money for him in the Danny Shanz Invitational, held on October 18th at Bretton Woods Golf Course. Over 200 Friends of Danny came together for a great day of golf, food and fun! On October 24, 2011, the Friends of Danny Shanz again teamed up with the Foundation for Community Betterment to host the 2nd Friends of Danny Shanz Golf Tournament. |
