Earth Conservation Corps, Anacostia, Washington, DC
7th Annual Washington, DC Golf Weekend Recipient
Since 1992, Earth Conservation Corps has successfully engaged disadvantaged youth ages 17 – 25 with the opportunity to develop professional skills while restoring the Anacostia River and their communities. Today, these participants- called Corps members – are clearing the Anacostia River and its tributaries of trash and debris, rebuilding the shore line, creating community access trails, and planting trees. They are also mobilizing over 5,000 youth and adults with hands-on environmental education and service opportunities. Motivated by their participation, graduates of the program have continued on to higher education and environmental careers, improving our nation’s social and economic health.
Their River of Hope Initiative seeks to utilize their successful model to engage over 2,000 unemployed youth currently in crisis. Funds raises by Betterment will help purchase an engine for a 30 passenger environmental service boat for ECC corps members to use on river clean up projects.
