4 month old Darren was diagnosed with a brain tumor and was receiving chemotherapy. His mother could not work as she had to take him for his chemo treatments. He could not be in daycare because the treatments wiped out his immune system. The family was therefore living on one income. They had health insurance, but the cost of fuel for constant trips back and forth from the hospital added up. The donation from Betterment helped with the cost of staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Delaware while Darren received his treatments.
