As a freshman at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Brenna, a native of Northeast Ohio, suffered a brain hemorrhage in Mid-November 2009 and was in a coma. Brenna's mother had taken up full-time residence in Grand Rapids so she could monitor Brenna's progress. Brenna's father, Tim, commuted between Michigan and Ohio so that he could continue working to support the family. Funds raised at the Black and White ball helped to pay the family's mortgage in Ohio for several months.
