Bellefaire JCB, Cleveland, OH
2004 1st Annual Cleveland Event Recipient
To most, an alarm clock, haircut and new clothing are necessities we cannot live without. The families and teens served by Bellefaire JCB have limited access to these day-to-day basics, which only intensifies their low self-esteem. At the 1st Annual Cleveland event in 2004, guests joined together to support Bellefaire JCB in order to help them infuse confidence in neglected and abused youth so that they can become participating members of their communities.
"Our clients have felt so fortunate to have received Betterment support,” commented Karen McHenry, Director of Juvenile Domestic Violence and Unruly Programs. “We utilized the funds to help furnish two families’ apartments, to purchase a special therapeutic basketball hoop for our Autistic students, and to purchase school supplies, hair cuts and recreational supplies like a bike helmet for a child with special needs.”
As the largest nonprofit child and family agency in the state of Ohio, Bellefaire JCB continues to fulfill its mission of helping children and preserving families. Their programs range from foster care, adoption and residential treatment to the Monarch School for children with autism.
According to Karen, Bellefaire JCB empowers those they serve to do the right thing, be a part of change and solutions, and believe in themselves. With Betterment’s help, they were able to do just that.
“The teens who benefited from the donations were exposed to the gift of unconditional love and caring from adults in their community. This is an awesome gift to a child who doesn’t trust adults. It helps repair their damaged faith in others.”
Karen continues, “Because of confidentiality, it is hard for our kids to say thank you to you. But I have seen their faces of shock and joy. The mother who had no furniture just kept hugging me, so appreciative of all Betterment had done.”
“Your gifts lifted their spirits, their trust in others.” ~Karen McHenry
