Ann Smith, Chicago, IL
2007 Chicago Derby De Mayo Recipient
Ann lived in Chicago's Lawndale neighborhood. Since losing one daughter to a drive-by shooting and another to a life of substance abuse on the streets, Ann had shown remarkable courage and selflessness. Unable to work due to illnesses, she was raising her three grandchildren with modest funds, at all times putting their needs before hers. Despite being unable to afford dental work to replace the front teeth she recently lost because of her illness, Ann continued to smile and remained the consummate optimist. She truly embodied the spirit of Betterment by being actively involved in her church, the kids' activities and community organizations. Betterment was pleased to give something back to her by sharing our event proceeds to help pay their modest monthly living expenses so that Ann could save for her needed dental work.
A few words from Ann... “What a SWEET and WONDERFUL HUG this is! I want to thank the entire Betterment Foundation for their vision of providing for the needs of others during times of difficulty. I'm truly honored to be a recipient. ……I've been through many horrible trials and tribulations, I'm living proof that love and generosity can elevate us all. Every act of kindness shown to me by others restores my spirit, inspires me and gives me hope. ….Webster's Dictionary defines Betterment as: making or becoming better, an improvement that adds to the value of. This describes how I feel, I'm becoming better as well as improved; and I pray that my ways, actions and my journey will be of value to others. ….Thanks to each and every one of you for reaching for my hand and touching my H E A R T.” |
