Please check out our EVENTS PAGE for information on this year's 2018 Alexadria Bay Paddle, Golf, Tennis, and Bike weekend, coming up July 27 & 28, 2018! In July 2001, The Alexandria Bay, NY chapter of The Foundation for Community Betterment hosted its first paddle on the St. Lawrence River. As one of the first Betterment events, the Alexandria Bay Paddle has become a river community tradition. For the past sixteen years, this annual event has represented all that Betterment hopes to achieve, as it brings together volunteers and participants of all ages while generating the spirit of philanthropy at a local level. The annual river paddle also demonstrates Betterment’s efforts in supporting the Alexandria Bay community, as past recipients have included local organizations as well as individual community members.
2017 Alexandria Bay Paddle, Golf, Tennis & Bike Exceeded Expectations for yet another year!
The 17th annual Paddle for Betterment, 9th annual Golf for Betterment, and 3nd annual Betterment Tennis events, once again exceeded all expectations. The next generation of Betterment also started the 1st annual Bike for Betterment, raising funds while taking turns biking for an hour!
With the fire boat leading us up the river, there were over seventy participants using skiffs, kayaks, canoes, and stand on boards. There were a record eight-four golfers and 34 tennis players. We donated over $18,000 back to the community due to your generosity. Thank you all for your support in making this year’s events truly memorable. Whether you paddled, volunteered, purchased a raffle, square, or 50/50 ticket, played in the golf tournament, rode a bike, or simply sent a donation or a prize, your contribution to these events made them not only wonderful community gatherings, but a tremendous show of support for our recipients, the students who were sent to leadership camp, Hearts for Youth, and the Rotary Club.
Ron McLennan Immediate Need Fund
The Ron McLennan Immediate Need Fund was established in memory of Ronald J. McLennan, a member of Betterment's host committee since its inception, who passed away in 2011. Although he was retired, Ron was Superintendent of Alexandria Central School for 27 years. He gave in so many big and small ways to the Alexandria Bay community, creating a ripple effect that personifies the mission of Betterment. The purpose of this immediate need fund will be to give Betterment the ability to provide funding for local Alexandria Bay recipients not just at the paddle but throughout the year.
