Jimmy Burns, Chicago, IL
2002 Immediate Need Fund Recipient
Five days before his second child’s birth in August 2002, Jimmy was diagnosed with Leukemia. As an active volunteer for scores of non-profit organizations, Betterment wanted to help Jim and his young family by paying their temporary housing costs while he underwent treatments in Houston. Unfortunately, in July 2003, our friend Jimmy succumbed to the disease.
Jimmy’s wife Dawn recently shared these very beautiful and inspirational words...
“The past two years have been a very difficult road. However, my road has been paved with the most amazing support from family and friends. The Foundation members are amongst those such compassionate contributors, and I will always be indebted for the support that you bestowed upon my family. At a very dark and uncertain time in our lives, you gave us the peace of mind and stability to focus on the importance of fighting Jim’s aggressive disease.”
“I have witnessed first hand how ‘one man’s life touches so many others’ through your help. Your most generous donation provided much more than a financial relief, it also provided inspiration, and that is immeasurable. I look forward in aiding the Betterment Foundation in what I hope could only be a contagious domino-effect of helping those in need, and leaving this world in a little bit of a better place than when I arrived.”
Dawn and Jimmy’s friends and family have done just that in Jimmy’s honor. “Since Jim’s passing, we have established the Jimmy Burns Foundation. Our mission is ‘dedicated to funding research for Leukemia, helping families touched by Leukemia, and ultimately preserving the spirit of Jimmy Burns.’ Since the foundation’s inception, we have granted $17,500 to families and research.”
“I cherish each moment and memory I have of Jim, and those stories will be passed on to our children. I aspire to follow Jim’s strong example of faith, courage and love. With these memories and the help of caring people all around me, I can now smile through the tears.”
