Humane Education Advocates Reaching Teachers (HEART), Chicago, IL
2010 Chicago Holiday Party Recipient
This year's holiday party will be raising funds for HEART, Humane Education Advocates Reaching Teachers. HEART's mission is to "create better students, compassionate citizens and contributors to the greater community." HEART Educators, Christine and Bob, have been providing free in-class and after-school programs for students at 17 Chicago schools. They engage students in learning through service projects such as raising money for local animal shelters, volunteering at homeless shelters, acting as student mentors to peers to show conflict resolution/positive lifestyle choices, encouraging literacy development, creating recycling programs for the school, developing plans to help encourage more peers to graduate, planting trees in the community, and hosting neighborhood clean-ups.
The Chicago Chapter of HEART started less than 2 years ago and already there is a waitlist of schools requesting HEART's free programs. With Betterment's help, they will be able to hire an additional educator to meet this growing need. More students will have the opportunity to participate in meaningful projects that contribute to the well-being of their neighborhoods while learning the importance of being active and engaged citizens.
