Areas like Alexandria Bay, NY, that are predominately poor and very rural are really feeling the impact from the tough economic times – especially in the winter when all the tourists and summer residents are gone.  In years past, they ran out of food in the local food bank and we received emails from the local school asking for support because 60 kids weren’t getting any meals over the weekends.  The food pantry services 40 to 50 families during the winter months in the Alexandria Bay School District area and the proceeds from the paddle go to replenish the food supply for the coming winter.
